This year, National Adoption Days will be a little different across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With each state having differing levels of COVID-19 restrictions and requirements for event attendance, the National Adoption Day we all know and love is becoming the National Adoption Days.

The GAP National Adoption Days allows for all GAP programs to come together to promote the re-homing of greyhounds and why they make fantastic pets. Each state will hold their own Adoption Day/Month event at multiple facilities across the country that will allow for potential adopters to find out more about the breed, learn about greyhound care, foster care opportunities and to find the perfect pooch to join their family.

In Victoria, National Adoption Day will fall on Sunday 18 April at GAP Seymour, and form part of a month-long series of events, both in person and online to celebrate National Adoption Month, and all things greyhounds.

New South Wales

Dr Alicia Fuller, GAP NSW, General Manager, said, “It is the best opportunity we have for families to come and see what all the Greyhound fuss is about. We are going to have about 45 greyhounds at the event, so you will almost certainly be able to find the size, look and personality of a dog that will best fit with your family dynamic.”

Last year was cancelled due to Covid-19 but 2019 was a huge success with more than 200 Greyhounds being adopted nationwide on one day – showing the incredible interest in greyhounds as pets. Most were adopting their first Greyhound, but a surprising number were there to collect their second after falling in love with the first.

GAP NSW will have a bunch of experts and other greyhound owners there on the day to chat to. They will answer any possible questions you have about the Greyhounds and what they are like to live with. Including any medical questions, temperament, how we match them with your/your families lifestyle and more.

As a bonus on the day, we will be sharing the space at Moore Park Entertainment quarter with “Dogs in the Park”. It really will be a great day out with market stalls, dog competitions, dog demonstrations, dog agility events such as jumps, tunnels, hoops and a whole lot more.

So, come on down, bring the family, meet and greet some beautiful greyhounds and enjoy the most important, best adoption day of the year. You never know… you may just find your paw-fect pet!

Queensland

Greyhound Adoption Program Queensland (GAP) will host the 2021 GAP Greyhound National Adoption and Open Day this Sunday 18 April 2021 at its South East Queensland GAP facility at Churchable.

Award winning and critically acclaimed performer, Todd McKenney is again the Greyhound National Adoption Day ambassador, with Todd having his own GAP greyhounds, Nancy Hayes and Joey.

This year the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission GAP is throwing open its doors to show off their facility including the GAP learning space, veterinary surgery, the kennels and the free run space. The GAP team will be available to answer questions about the adoption and foster process, general greyhound behaviour and their medical needs.

Acting Racing Integrity Commissioner Mark Ainsworth said this Greyhound National Adoption Day will be a great opportunity for attendees who have a preapproved adoption application to meet and adopt a greyhound on the day.

This year we have asked potential new owners to pre-register their details and on Sunday they will have the chance to meet the GAP staff, tour the facility and receive individual attention as they adopt their greyhound,” he said.

“When matching our greyhounds, the team considers several factors including a family’s lifestyle, regular activities, children, other pets and the home environment.

Adoption Day is part of National Greyhound Adoption month, where throughout the month of April GAP programs around the country promote the benefits of owning a greyhound.

GAP QLD works with the Greyhound Racing industry to rehome as many retired canine athletes as possible as a key QRIC animal welfare initiative.

To keep everyone COVID safe on Sunday, tours of the GAP facility must be pre-booked. Tour bookings can be made here.

Western Australia

Greyhounds as Pets WA (GAP) is encouraging people to become a greyhound’s next victory by adopting a four-legged companion this April for just $75, as part of Greyhound Adoption Month.

During the month of April, GAP will discount its adoption fee from $350 to $75, with all greyhounds vet checked, fully vaccinated, microchipped, sterilised, and ready for adoption.

Following the success of National Adoption Day in previous years, GAP is extending the opportunity to the entire month after attracting hundreds of potential adoptees and families in previous years and successfully finding available greyhounds their forever homes.

Renowned veterinarian and animal welfare advocate and president of the WA Division of the Australian Veterinary Association, Dr Garnett Hall, is the Western Australian GAP ambassador, and said greyhounds are the perfect companion animal.

“Greyhounds are gentle, sweet natured dogs who really enjoy human companionship, and are low maintenance pets that do not require much grooming. They are the professional athletes of the canine world, and this means that they have very few genetic health issues and are not predisposed many of the health problems that may affect dogs of a similar size,” Garnett said.

“Greyhounds don’t need vast amounts of space, in fact they thrive in urban spaces, are very adaptable and are equally suited to large properties, suburban homes, units and even apartments.”

“If you have been thinking of adding a greyhound into your life or your family, I encourage you to learn about them, get in contact with Greyhounds as Pets to meet them and take up this great opportunity during adoption month.”

Each Australian state will come together to support greyhound adoption and boost awareness of greyhounds as pets by holding an adoption day or month during April.

If people are interested in adopting a greyhound from GAP, they can complete an adoption application form via the GAP website.

Greyhounds will be matched to their new homes based on their individual needs, to ensure it’s the perfect fit for both the greyhound and their new family.

In a record time of less than two hours, 48 retired WA greyhounds found their new homes during the 2019 GAP National Adoption Day, with the event attracting over 220 potential adoptees.
