Greyhound Racing in Australasia: $2.6 Billion Economic Powerhouse
The greyhound racing industry continues to demonstrate its critical role in the Australasian economy, generating a gross value added (GVA) of $2.6 billion annually, according to the latest Greyhound Australasia Size & Scope study for 2022-23, completed by IER.
This impressive contribution includes $0.94 billion in direct economic activity and an additional $1.66 billion in induced flow-on benefits, underscoring the industry’s far-reaching impact across the region.
Economic Contribution and Job Creation
The greyhound racing industry supports 15,748 full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs, including 6,507 direct roles and 9,240 in flow-on employment. Collectively, these positions account for $1.41 billion in household income, further strengthening local communities.
Spending and Industry Engagement
With direct spending reaching $1.92 billion, the industry’s core activities include:
- Racing and wagering: $1.68 billion
- Preparation of greyhounds: $172 million
- Breeding and production: $70.3 million
Greyhound racing also relies on a vast network of participants, including 33,655 roles across Australia and New Zealand. This includes 4,800 volunteers, 3,300 racing club and industry employees, 4,200 trainers, and 3,000 breeders.
Race Day Success
In the 2022/23 season, greyhound racing hosted an astounding 52,500 individual races across 4,700 race meetings at 62 clubs. These events drew 620,000 attendees, from participants and officials to general spectators, solidifying the sport’s position as a key community and entertainment activity.
Speaking on the findings, Greyhound Australasia Chair Rob Vellar highlighted the industry’s resilience and growth.
“These numbers reflect the strength and dedication of the greyhound racing community across Australasia,” Vellar said. “From the economic value we generate to the significant employment and local engagement we support, the industry continues to deliver in spades.”
