DNA FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions
You can order a DNA test at any time after the greyhound has been microchipped. We suggest that you organise a DNA test at least 6-8 weeks prior to the breeding female coming on to season, so that you have plenty of time before you need to mate/inseminate the greyhound.
You do not need to wait until the greyhound has retired from racing to complete a DNA test although the greyhound must be retired to be used for breeding purposes.
From 1 July 2024, Greyhounds Australasia (GA) has introduced an additional DNA service to industry participants. GA will provide a Parentage Certification Service for any greyhound under the age of 24 months (named or unnamed). The service will provide a certification of a greyhound’s parentage and a full pedigree certificate via DNA testing. The Parentage Certification Service (PCS) is available at a cost of $130 per greyhound aged under 24 months.
A DNA test will cost $195 and this can be paid by credit card by completing a DNA request form here. Additional vet service fees apply that are not covered in this payment.
A printable version of the request form is also available through the above link.

All being well, we would anticipate processing times of approximately 4 weeks to obtain results for DNA Fingerprinting of a Greyhound.
During this time, we suggest the following:
- If your breeding female is on season, please enquire with your state controlling body to see if you meet requirements for an exemption waiver.
- When posting your parcel, take note of the tracking details. You can then check the status of your parcel at any time through New Zealand Post. The tracking number can be found in the clear window of your parcel post bag, with the tracking number usually beginning with the letters LK.
Once your results are available, you will receive a copy of the report by email, or if you do not have an email address, a copy will be posted to you.

Both buccal (cheek) swabs and hair samples are now required for DNA Fingerprinting of a Greyhound.
The veterinarian will take two swab samples from the greyhound, with one swab from each side of the cheek, and a hair sample. These are then placed in the bags provided to you, and lodged over the counter at the post office for transport to our lab.
